The Council - About Us

The South African Council for Valuers was established on 1 January 1983 by section 2 of the Valuers’ Act, 1982 (Act No. 23 of 1982). On 31 August 2001, the Council was replaced by the SA Council for the Property Valuers Profession established by section 2 of The Property Valuers Profession Act, 2000.

The Council’s main functions are the:

  • registration of Professional Valuers, Professional Associated Valuers and Candidate Valuers.;
  • maintenance of their integrity;
  • enhancement of their status;
  • improvement of their academic and other qualifications and of the standard of services rendered by them;
  • protection of members of the public in their dealings with registered persons; and
  • drawing up and keeping up to date of a register of all registered persons

To perform the function of protecting members of the public, the Council has promulgated rules which, inter alia, prescribe a code of conduct with which Valuers, Associated Valuers and Candidate Valuers have to comply in the performance of their work in property valuation.

Depending on practical experience of work in property valuation and certain other criteria the Council may register a person as an Associated Valuer subject to specific restrictions or conditions. Some Associated Valuers prefer to perform work in property valuations in a restricted field and those persons are often the experts in their particular field of activity. The restrictions or conditions applicable to associate valuers are reflected in the list of Registered Associated Valuers (click on 'more options' on the left). To qualify for registration as an Associated Valuer, a Candidate Valuer has to comply with certain minimum requirements.
